LONG TERM STAY

Budapest’s first hostel, the Back Pack Guesthouse, has added two floors to its colourfully painted suburban ‘villa’ in south Buda and been reborn as Shantee House. It's all good and the fun (and sleeping bodies in high season) still spills out into a lovely landscaped garden, with hammocks, a yurt and a gazebo. Two of the five doubles are en suite.

Traditional Hungarian dishes are primarily based on meats, seasonal vegetables, fruits, fresh bread, cheeses and honey. Ever tasted Paprika? You will be sure to have had it after a couple of days as it grows naturally in this country. If Mouth-watering, sumptuous dishes, rich goulashes, spicy sausages, hearty soups and yummy desserts are your thing then youll be very much at home. If you fancy checking out some traditional recipes either before your stay or putting your cooking skills to the test in our Backpack kitchen, check out www.chew.hu/recipes/
If for some shocking reason you dont love Hungarian food fret not, Budapest is a haven for international food with some great Vegetarian, Thai and Middle Eastern cafes and restaurants.

We highly recommend a visit to the Hummus bar! www.hummusbar.hu

To work off the food just consumed, visit one of Budapest's dance houses (táncház) for some good-time, boot slapping folk music. Folk dance is a living culture in Budapest and can be found happening every night of the week. Dance houses are a funky, low budget alternative to discos and dance bars and very popular with both young and old. A shot of pálinka will soon help take away any reservation you have about joining in!
Some good spots to check out for some tnchz are Gdr Klub, Fon and the Kobuci Klub.

Wanting to start up a converstation with a local? Ask them if they prefer drinking either Pálinka or Unicum. It seems to be one or the other. Then try both and see which you prefer!
