LONG TERM STAY

Budapest’s first hostel, the Back Pack Guesthouse, has added two floors to its colourfully painted suburban ‘villa’ in south Buda and been reborn as Shantee House. It's all good and the fun (and sleeping bodies in high season) still spills out into a lovely landscaped garden, with hammocks, a yurt and a gazebo. Two of the five doubles are en suite.

6. CHILL-OUT ON MARGARET ISLAND!

Despite its central location, Margaret Island is an extremely chilled place to spend a few hours. Its popular with the locals who come here to relax. You can rest under the more than 500 year old trees, jog around 5,300 metres of paradise, swim in one of two pools, throw a Frisbee or just go for a stroll around the Island. If youre in need of some culture however, this was originally a religious centre and the ruins of St Margaret's Dominican nunnery which are on the east side near the ruins of a Franciscan church. Fancy spending a little more time? There are a couple of cool outdoor bars we recommend checking out. Hold Udvar on the southern-eastern side of the Island and Cha-Cha-Cha Terasz can be found at the Athletic Centre.

The best way to get to the island from Backpack is by taking tram 4 or 6 and get off at the middle of the bridge.

CITY PARK
Formally a swamp the city park now offers a huge chilled area for everyone, whether to stroll around, picnic, explore the Vajdahunyad Castle at the Heroes' Square end of the park, a row on the lake in summer or ice skate in winter! Or for pure escapism, bring your swimming costume and visit theSzéchenyi Bath, one of the largest spas in Europe, truly its a must!

ZOO AND BOTANICAL GARDENS
Or why not bring out the child in yourself and visit the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Gardens, its full of animals from around the world and has an excellent conservation and breeding programme.
Top tip: the zoo hosts jazz and light music concerts during July and August, tickets are around 3000 HUF (10 Euro).
